TEA REVIEW

I bought a Muji tea device at the weekend, that is, a glass beaker, with another smaller glass beaker inside it with holes for drainage and tealeaf-filtering. I can't find it online, so it must be terribly trendy and hip. Anyway, today being Monday, I shall use the aforementioned device in a review of the teas in my office. These are: Tchae "Citrus Green" Tea, London Fruit & Herb "Camomile Soother", Lapsang Souchong, and Ty-phoo English Tea. I've also got some Lift "Instant Lemon" tea but one can assume that is vile from the outset.
: Tchae "Citrus Green" :
Pleasing colour and scent. Fresh and invigorating, although slightly tart. Utterly vile on tasting, full of tannin and rather like sucking a boiled Sloe. Perhaps it needs sugar. Presentation box illustrated with a snake, most appropriately as the infusion does taste like diluted venom. Avoid.
: London Fruit & Herb "Camomile Soother" :
Rich golden colour, most pleasing to the eye. Distinct lack of scum floating on the infusion, must be a good quality bag. Scent is sweet and cloying, unobtrusively flowery with a touch of honey. Tastes like tapwater. Perhaps it needs sugar. Inoffensive in a washed out, gutless way. Not bad.
: Lapsang Souchong :
Lowest common denominator smoky tea. Colour: Burnt umber, amber and treacle. Aroma: Horse piss. Smells like a bonfire in an oak woodland in October. Hints of toasted cedar, sandal, and horses piss. Earthy and warm, rooting. Overall pleasing scent. Taste is light on the tannins, rich and warming. Wouldn't work with sugar. Refreshing and cleansing to the pallete. Jolly nice cuppa.
: Ty-phoo :
Archetypal English Tea of the masses. Colour: Warm brown with amber and rose hints. Smells like tea. For those unfamiliar with traditional English tea, this is slightly sweet with a vaguely smoky backwash, like a baked clod of earth. Taste is light and refreshing, if a little lacklustre. Definately needs sugar, and milk. Not at all bad really, if you prefer something more subtle that the balls-out in-yer-face Lapsang Souchong.
So, to RateMyTea.com ahaha: 1) Lapsang Souchong, 2) Ty-phoo, 3) Camomile, 4) Citrus Green.
