Blair to publish Iraq dossier
Am I the only person that sees this anti-Iraq sabre-rattling in a completely cynical light? Firstly, the US and its "allies" are supposed to be engaged in The War Against Terrorism, hereafter referred to as TWAT. I can only think that flying in the face of global opinion and particularly those less sympathetic states will make TWAT immesurably harder. Dubyuh's popularity, dubious at best (remember how he only got in on a dodgy recount with a majority of one?) appears to be plummeting at home in the US. Emperor Tony's popularity, if we are to believe what we read, is also faltering. Nothing unites the country like a War (as Thatcher illustrated with the Falklands War) and similarly nothing boosts popularity like a war easily won. Which, give or take a few friendly Fire incidents is probably what the forthcoming Gulf War II will be. So, good for the President and the PM there.
There is also the increasingly dim view that the world is taking of the US shunning of practically every international treaty going. There is the US import levvy imposed on steel, the Kyoto agreement on climate change, that anti-proliferation of thermonuclear weapons and other mass destruction weapons, the more recent Rio summit flaunting, the list goes on. What began as an insular world view appears to have imploded into a firmly isolationist standpoint under the captaincy of Dubyuh. And, unshockingly, Emperor Tone follows Dubyuh blindly, except under extreme pressure from the majority of his own political party (and the rest of the world) when he finally plucks up the courage to say "ah, er, well, let's not be too hasty eh?" while at the same time saying nothing in particular about the arrogance of the US government. Dubyuh even has the nerve to call himself a modern day Churchill, which is laughable. Saddam is the ageing leader of a corrupt tinpot third world country, not the commander of a highly industrialised superpower as Adolf was. Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure that Saddam is a very bad man, and should be removed from power if possible. I just don't think hurling petrol into the incandescant embers of the Middle East is going to do anyone much good in the long term. But then, who thinks further ahead than the next term of government nowadays?
